In the spring of 2019, Outer Banks Olive Oil took a big step in bringing our beloved gourmet experience to even more locals and visitors along the Outer Banks — with the opening of our Outlets Nags Head location.

Back then, a familiar retail space — formerly occupied by Gymboree — sat empty in the Outlets Nags Head shopping center after the retailer’s bankruptcy. It was the perfect opportunity for us to plant new roots in a community we love.

Our co-owner, Laura Wayland, shared the exciting news on social media and with local press: they were planning to open in time for Memorial Day weekend, just in time to welcome summer crowds and holiday shoppers alike.

But this location wasn’t just another store — it was a purposeful expansion with a twist.

🎁 A Name with Meaning

Instead of operating under the Chip’s Wine & Beer name, Laura and Phil chose to brand the new store as Outer Banks Olive Oil Company — a name they knew would resonate with outlet shoppers looking for gifts, local flair, and distinctive products. The idea came from the success of the Duck waterfront location, which had already built a strong reputation under the Olive Oil Company name.

With “Outer Banks” right in the name, it became clear that this would be a destination not just for olive oils and vinegars but also for wine, craft beer, cigars, and specialty goods that make perfect souvenirs, gifts, and indulgent treats.

🥂 More Than Shopping — A Place to Gather

Once inside, visitors discovered that the Nags Head location was more than a gift shop:

• A bar with 12 rotating beer and wine taps

• Wine served by the glass

• Cheese plates and curated pairings

• Tastings and events inspired by the experience at our Kill Devil Hills flagship store

• A selection of cigars similar to what longtime customers knew and loved at KDH

The goal was simple — create a space where shoppers could pause, explore, taste, and connect, whether they came in for a quick gift or planned to linger over a glass of wine.

The location quickly became a highlight of a day shopping at the Outlets — the perfect place to take a break, indulge in something delicious, and discover new flavors to bring home.

Today, our Nags Head location continues to be a vibrant part of the Outer Banks community, inviting guests from near and far to taste, explore, and experience the best in olive oils, balsamics, wine, beer, cigars, and gourmet delights.
